About my Work . . .
Since specializing in ceramics at Falmouth College my work and techniques have developed. I make all my work using a slab technique. I use mainly porcelain, as it seems to be the clay I have naturally developing using and enjoy the most. It just feels right and has such interesting and beautiful qualities. The horses and hares are made using slabs of clay built up, manipulated and pushed around to give the desired effect. After firing to 1000 degrees I add a wash of oxide to pick out the features and textures in the clay. The piece is then re-fired to 1250 degrees.

The horses are particularly tricky in that they need extra support during the making and firing due to the weight on the legs.

The hares are a constant inspiration due to their fantastic character and abundance of life. They are an expression of life being contemplated; I love to explore the animal’s essence, its nature and character and it is this that I have tried to refine and convey in my work.

I find the abundance of life in animals both mesmerizing and inspirational and it always brings me back to the wonderful simplicity of life created in such an amazing way.
